Through Music

For as long as I can remember, music has had the power to help me experience the world in new ways.

When I was growing up, music provided many of the building blocks from which I started to build my identity. Starting with the first mix tapes I made off of the radio and the first album I bought with my own money, songs and the conversations they sparked helped me start to figure out the world around me and what I thought about it all.

As I grew up a bit and further immersed myself in music, I was further fascinated by a song’s ability to transform virtually every moment in life. Music could energize, it could relax, it could commemorate… I was convinced that it could do anything. I quickly became the guy teased for having a soundtrack for every day, and I was the guy glued to the jukebox in any place that had one.

More recently, I’ve spent the last several years helping create new ideas with music, and brand new companies in the world of music. I’ve never been accused of being short on opinions about music; it’s only more recently that those have become professional opinions. In the course of this work, I’ve done a fair amount of writing and speaking about everything from algorithms to album drops to how music can inspire new ways to think about the fundamentals of how we do business.

Which brings me to today. I’m very fortunate to find myself amongst so many people who are pursuing bold ideas: new companies, new industries, and dramatic change within existing companies. With all of this inspiration, I’m brimming with more ideas than ever. I just haven’t written much about it over the past few years (this also may have something to do with having two small kids).

My intention here is to share my developing thoughts on the many ways in which I believe that music can help us all experience the world in new ways. While much of what I write will be rooted in music and the industry around it, I hope that the nature of music’s universal power in culture will lead me to ideas that ripple far broader.

Some of what I will share will be sparked by my work experiences, some will stem from personal experiences, and some will be the playlists that I still compulsively create. All of it, I hope, will further fuel conversations about music and what it can inspire in us all.
